Newly renovated, the Birnam Wood Golf Club is a full-service golf club delivering premier dining, tennis, fitness and social programs in the elegant setting of Montecito, California. The club was designed to honor its roots as a historic lemon packing house to one of California’s largest lemon ranches, while delivering enlivened spaces with multi-generational appeal. The clubhouse served as the operational center of the packing house. In revisioning the interiors of the clubhouse, BraytonHughes Design Studios based in San Francisco, acknowledged the history of the packing house and allowed the historic building’s cut stone exterior and curved arches to inform the design. Entry, living room and event spaces, women’s and men’s locker rooms, boardroom/library of the clubhouse feature a neutral color palette and locally inspired materials that speak to the history of the site. Couristan’s woven Axminster program was utilized to create carpets that were developed with a residential approach, inspired by vintage area rugs with organic linework that lend a hand-crafted feel to the clubhouse’s aesthetic.
