Project Overview

Built in 1913 by renowned California architect Irving Gill, the Orli has remained a signature landmark on Draper Avenue in sunny La Jolla. Located a block away from the beach and across from the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, the property houses 13 bespoke guestrooms and suites across two buildings – the George Kautz House and the Kate Sessions House.  After a two-year renovation, this boutique hotel made its official debut in October 2022. ML Design Co. a full-service interior design studio based in Southern California, diligently restored the property by maintaining the significance of Gill’s design and influence, while weaving in the iconic elements of the surrounding landscape and giving it a modern flair. All rooms and suites within the property integrate a clean, high-contrast interior with warm design elements, with each offering a unique twist based on the quintessential La Jolla lifestyle. ML Design’s Principal Designer and Founder Maddie Lord utilized our hand-tufted rug program to create a series of beautiful, modern residential-styled custom rugs that graced the floors in the Lobby, Guestrooms and Penthouse of this historic property.  (Photography by Will Edwards)
