Project Overview

The Durham is a boutique hotel that has become a community and cultural hub in downtown Durham, North Carolina. The only independently owned and locally operated downtown hotel, the Durham offers 53 thoughtfully appointed rooms, including four suites, an upscale restaurant, coffee bar and rooftop lounge as well as private event space for weddings, business meetings and community events. Built in 1968, this gem of mid-century modern architecture originally housed the headquarters of the Home Savings and Loan Association.  Commune Design based in Los Angeles was responsible for the interiors and branding of the property during its recent renovations. The firm drew its inspiration from the building’s architecture as well as the work of artists Josef and Anni Albers and their colleagues during the heyday of the Black Mountain College of nearby Asheville.  Couristan supplied the firm with planning and design support in creating these woven Axminster geometric carpets for the property’s restaurant areas.
